David Decker

August Athlete of the Month

My motivation has shifted from being at the top of the leader board to focusing on longevity and having fun.

The Journey.

We sat down with David to learn more about him and his CrossFit journey.

1.TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?

Born in Knoxville….58 years old….Grateful Husband and father of two girls.

One is a L3 at UTK Law and the other is a rising Senior at UTK.

I also own a local Commercial Construction Company.

2.HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH CrossFit First Creek?

Five Years?????

3. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT? WHAT HAS KEPT YOU

DOING IT? HAS YOUR MOTIVATION CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST

STARTED?

Around 2011 I saw the CF Games on ESPN and was intrigued. I was tired of the globo gym

routine and wanted to try something different. My motivation has shifted

from being at the top of the leader board to focusing on longevity and having fun.

4. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CFFC?

My Coaches always look out for me and offer encouragement and advise.

They also are quick to offer a courtesy laugh at my corny jokes.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

Longevity. Working smarter, being efficient, understanding that being smooth

equals being fast……and not being afraid to scale.

Basically accepting that I am aging. My goal is to be able to work out the next day.

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LIFT, MOVEMENT, OR WOD?

LEAST FAVORITE?

I am partial to The Chief. It was the first WOD I did when I started……I thought I was going to die.

My least favorite is any AMRAP over 20 minutes….

7. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CFFC OR JUST CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?

I enjoy the people and Coaches……I enjoy celebrating when others reach a goal and/or master a new movement.

I also enjoy offering encouragement and helpful tips.

8. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOU IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

Being in shape helps me mentally. It also helps me be a better father and business owner.

Looking decent in a bathing suit is an added bonus!

9. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS?

HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

At this point in my CF life, my goal is to continue to be physically able to work out each day.

I always have to rehab something….shoulders, hips, heels, etc. I have

accepted this as my new reality. It also keeps things interesting…..!

10. WHEN YOU ARE NOT CROSSFITTING, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE

THING TO DO?

Boating and Fly Fishing! I also volunteer as a Mentor at Angelic Ministries.

11. WHAT IS ONE FUN THING ABOUT YOU THAT WE MAY NOT

KNOW YET?

My favorite beer is Miller Lite

12. WHAT IS THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE CONSIDERING

CROSSFIT OR WHO IS NEW TO CROSSFIT?

Ask lots of questions and come back the next day…..90% of success is predicated on

just showing up on time and with the right mindset.

13. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING

CROSSFIT? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT FUEL?

I am a disciple of Mark Sisson and the Primal Blueprint. Basically eating whole foods, lean meats,

lots of vegetables and healthy fats……stay away from starches and sugars.
